Technical Advisory Board

Natural Energy Wyre has engaged three world class experts to ensure that our proposals benefit from the latest research and understanding in marine modelling and development:

 

Professor George Aggidis

Professor Aggidis is Professor and Head of Energy Engineering at Lancaster University and Director of Lancaster University Renewable Energy Group & Fluid Machinery Group. His previous career included 25 years’ industrial and academic experience. His most recent position in industry was Director and Engineering Development Manager for the turbine and hydropower UK Company, Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Ltd. He has a strong focus on engineering science applied to industry-led requirements in renewable energy and turbines. His main research area is in computational and experimental modelling, control and the economics of novel turbines applied to energy and renewables, including wave, tidal and hydro power.

Professor Aggidis is a lead partner on the EPSRC SuperGen Marine research consortia also involved with Tidal Range Energy Research and Development Projects predominantly on the West Coast of the UK. He is Founding Chair of the North West Tidal Energy Group with research on the Bridge across the Bay Tidal Energy Project at Morecambe Bay, Solway, Dutton and the Wyre Tidal Energy Projects.  He is a Member of the advisory expert panel for the Mersey Tidal Energy Barrage project with involvement on the Severn barrage consultations, the North Wales Tidal Energy Group and research related work on the proposed Swansea Bay lagoon. He is also Chair of the Technical Advisory Board for the Natural Energy Wyre Tidal Energy Project.

 

Professor Roger Falconer

Professor Roger Falconer is Professor of Water Management (Part-time) and Founding Director of the Hydro-environmental Research Centre (1997-2014) at Cardiff University and Director of Roger Falconer Water Consultancy Ltd. He was previously Professor of Water Engineering (1987-97) at the University of Bradford (1987-97). He has extensive experience of undertaking research on hydro-environmental modelling (including tidal renewable energy) and has published over 450 papers and technical reports in the field. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, was President of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (2011-15) and is a member of the Trustee Board of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.

He was a member of : the Government’s Expert Panel for the Severn Tidal Power Feasibility Studies, Technical Consultant to Hafren Power, a member of the Expert Panel for the Mersey Barrage, and Consultant to ITP providing technical support to the Hendry review of tidal lagoons. He regularly consults on a range of tidal energy projects.

His main areas of expertise are in flood risk modelling; flow, water quality and sediment transport modelling; water security and marine renewable energy from barrages, lagoons and tidal stream turbines.

 

Chris Binnie

Chris Binnie is a consulting engineer in water resources development, hydro and tidal power and flood risk assessment. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Visiting Professor at Exeter University as well as a Past President of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.

His commercial experience includes promotion of the 1,500 MW Dinorwic Hydro Power project, Severn Tidal Power Group studies of the Severn Barrages, Director of Atkins and Chairman of the Defra Thames Tideway Strategy Steering Group. In addition, he was Chairman of the Defra Independent Technical and Engineering Expert Panel for tidal power schemes in the Severn, a Member of the advisory expert panel for the Mersey Tidal Energy Barrage project and a Consultant to ITP providing technical support to the Hendry review team reviewing the scope for tidal range power around UK.

The Tidal Gateway

Tidal gateways provide innovative and environmentally friendly conversion of the power present in tidal range.

The “Wyre” tidal gateway has much more to deliver to this small Northwest area by providing essential flood defences and huge potential for economic growth in multiple sectors including manufacturing, tourism and transport.

The Location

The site is located on the Lancashire coast, between the industrial town of Fleetwood to the west and the small rural village of Knott End to the east. This specific site is positively unique, encompassing ideal geophysical and geological features, close proximity to a substantial National Grid connection, and some of the largest tidal ranges in the country.

The River

The River Wyre estuary is ideal for the Wyre Barrage, with its narrow, deep channel and bulbous body; a 600-meter span between its land masses; and an average tidal range of 8.2m and 4.5m during spring and neap cycles respectively, making power generation from this location the most economically viable in UK.
